(Amsterdam).- The Kansspelautoriteit (Ksa) filed more than 4,600 reports with Meta in April regarding illegal advertisements. Combating illegal gambling offerings is one of Ksa’s top priorities. Special attention is given to the marketing practices of these gambling companies, which frequently advertise on social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram. For this reason, Ksa monitors the volume of illegal ads.
Illegal practices
Illegal gambling operators place numerous ads on social media. They often use the names and logos of well‑known Dutch athletes and major brands to boost their credibility. For consumers, it is often difficult to determine whether a gambling operator is licensed. To protect consumers, Ksa is strongly committed to tackling online advertising from illegal providers, including by filing more frequent reports with major media companies.
Cooperation in alliance
To address illegal operators on social media, Ksa works closely with various companies and organizations. During a recent alliance meeting, current knowledge, trends, and insights were shared. Advertising on social media was a key topic, as these platforms reach large audiences.
The working group also discussed how companies can protect their brand identity and held a brainstorming session on what else is needed to tackle illegal operators on social media. The outcomes of this meeting will be used by Ksa in the coming months to strengthen its enforcement.
Disrupting infrastructure
In the Netherlands, online gambling is only permitted for licensed operators. Ksa’s approach to illegal offerings ranges from imposing fines to disrupting the infrastructure used by illegal providers. Within this infrastructure, the online world—and social media in particular—plays a major role.
