(Cyprus).- City of Dreams Mediterranean, A luxury hotel-casino billed as "the largest in Europe" opened its doors Tuesday in Limassol, southern Cyprus, aiming to attract more than 300,000 additional tourists a year to the island.

With 14 floors, 500 rooms and suites with sea views, long and winding pools, sports facilities and even an open-air amphitheater, this complex "is the largest of its kind in Europe," said Grant Johnson, the American real estate director. of the City of Dreams, during the inauguration.
The establishment "gives Cyprus the possibility of becoming a first-rate tourist destination," said Lawrence Ho, president of the Hong Kong group Melco, which devised the project.
With this complex, Cyprus will be able to “conquer new markets in Africa and the Middle East”, according to him, who indicated that his goal was to build a hotel “to which James Bond would like to go”.
With a gaming area of 7,500 m², 100 tables and 1,000 slot machines, the hotel-casino is ready to receive clients, as long as they can afford it, since the price of the rooms in high season ranges between 425 and 2,300 euros (467 and 2,500 dollars) per night.
City of Dreams, the first property Melco opens outside of Asia, employs 2,000 people.
Until 2015, casinos were illegal in Cyprus. In addition to the Orthodox Church, very influential on the island, part of the population opposed them, such as former president Demetris Christofias (2008-2013), who associated them with "corruption".
In 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic, the tourist influx broke records in Cyprus, with the arrival of 3.97 million visitors, who left 2.680 million euros (2.950 million dollars) on the island.
The tourism sector, essential for the national economy, is responsible for about 15% of GDP.
