(Brasilia).- Davi Alcolumbre was elected for the second time as Head of the Senate, and will have the challenge of catering to the opposition and being close to the government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. In the vote, he received the support of both the Workers' Party (PT) and the Liberal Party (PL).

This Saturday, Davi Alcolumbre (União-AP) was re-elected by his colleagues, with 73 out of 81 votes, for another two years at the head of the House. He took over the presidency immediately after being elected. This is his second time in office. Davi led the House for the first time between 2019 and 2021.
The parliamentarian from União Brasil, who is also now in charge of the National Congress, was chosen after defending the independence of the legislature and the power it has gained over the budget in recent years. In a speech to the plenary, Alcolumbre cited the need to "fulfil agreements" on parliamentary amendments, in reference to the crisis that has been dragging on since 2024.
Davi promised to work for Brazil, thinking about job creation, economic growth, social development, the protection of public health and quality education for Brazilians, as well as pledging to approve measures focused on the safety of Brazilians.
Also, the parliamentarian has signalled that he wants to move forward with the bill to free games of chance. He was one of the organisers of the text's progress, but it was postponed at the end of last year. The bill establishes that the Ministry of Finance will have to regulate the activity.
The main opponent of the proposal to legalise gambling in the Senate, Senator Eduardo Girão (Novo-CE) was also a candidate for president this Saturday (1st). Girão gave a tough speech against Alcolumbre, whom he referred to as "the candidate of the continuity that wants to return". Apparently, the Ceará senator's speech didn't work because he received the support of only three other peers, in addition to his own, and he also wore himself out with the new president of the Senate, Davi Alcolumbre.
