(São Paulo).- Brazil's President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has come out strongly against the regulation of sports betting in the country, warning that if gambling addiction is not adequately addressed, he will not hesitate to ban it.

This statement came against a backdrop of growing concern about the impact of gambling on household incomes, especially those dependent on the Bolsa Familia social assistance programme.
Since the legalisation of sports betting in Brazil in 2018, the market has grown exponentially, positioning it as one of the five largest in the world, with a law passed in December 2023.
This legislation included both sports betting and popular online casino games, including slots, developed by large companies in the sector. Fortune Tiger, a popular game on social media in Brazil, has sparked controversy and debate, becoming the focus of media attention and the subject of police investigations into its promotion and suspicions of financial crimes.
President Lula da Silva, referring to the social impacts of such games, noted that “many families have seen their resources severely compromised, to the point of bankruptcy. If regulation does not work, I will not hesitate to put a definitive end to (gambling)”, he said.
