Gleisi criticises Fux and says banning gambling only for the poor is ‘prejudiced’

(Brasilia) - PT president Gleisi Hoffmann said that Judge Luiz Fux's decision to ban only Bolsa Família and BPC ( Continuous Income Benefit) users from sports betting is ‘prejudiced’.
“Banning users of social programmes from using resources on gambling sites, as Judge Fux ruled, is prejudicial and will not make a dent in the gambling industry. The inducement of addiction and the threat to the economy of families must be tackled with a total ban,” Gleisi wrote on her social media.
Fux's decision was published on Wednesday 13. In the text, the minister also orders that measures banning gambling advertising and propaganda aimed at children come into force immediately.
A Central Bank study showed that Bolsa Família beneficiaries spent USD 517,530M on gambling via Pix in August - an amount equivalent to 20% of the total transferred by the programme in the month.
Fux's measure is milder than the one requested by the Attorney General's Office (PGR). The prosecutor, Paulo Gonet, has filed a direct action of unconstitutionality (Adin) calling for the suspension of the laws that allow gambling to operate in the country.
