Second quarterly report of 2023 of the General Directorate of Gambling Regulation

(Madrid).- The GGR for the quarter was €312.61 million, which represents an increase of 2.52% compared to the previous quarter and 55.06% compared to the same quarter in 2022.

Of the rest of the main magnitudes, player deposits and withdrawals, their variation rates increased with respect to the previous year by 19.62% and 2.97% respectively. Compared to the previous quarter, deposits decreased by -2.01% and withdrawals decreased by -2.33%. Marketing spending experienced an increase of 1.90% compared to the previous quarter and new accounts decreased by -7.71%. The variations with respect to the same quarter of the previous year are shown in Table 1.
In the analysis of the GGR by game segments it is observed that:
The €312.61 million of GGR is distributed in €133.31 million in Betting (42.64%); €3.54 million in Bingo (1.13%); €149.86 million in Casino (47.94%), €0.14 million in Contests (0.05%) and €25.76 million in Poker (8.24%).
The betting segment has a growth rate of 2.07% compared to the previous quarter and 118.90% compared to the same quarter of the previous year. Conventional counterpart sports betting increased by 1.81% and live betting by 3.47% compared to the previous quarter. Horse riding bets increased by 22.67% and other bets decreased by -15.08%.
Bingo has experienced a growth of 5.54% compared to the previous quarter and 5.51% compared to the same quarter of 2022.
In the casino segment there has been a growth of 4.53% compared to the first quarter of 2023 and a positive annual variation rate of 27.92%. This annual growth occurs in slot machines with 29.91% and in live roulette with 31.77%. Compared to the previous quarter, the rate of tsar machines increased by 8.93%, the conventional rule by 0.20%, while the live rule decreased by -0.84%.
In this quarter, the competitions will experience a decrease of -41.50% and an increase of 1464.85% in the annual variation rate. This segment presents irregular behavior with annual variation rates in the second quarter of 733.02% in 2020; -87.09% in 2021; -98.19% in 2022.
In this second quarter of 2023, poker presents a decrease of -5.84% compared to the previous quarter and an increase of 27.57% compared to the same quarter of the previous year. Compared to the previous quarter, tournament poker decreased by -2.77% and cash poker decreased by -13.58%. The annual variation rates are positive at 38.12% and 4.85% respectively.
Based on the results of the movements analyzed, the percentage distribution of the GGR in the different segments in the first quarters of the period 2020 to 2023 is shown in Table 2.
Marketing spending in the quarter was €96.64 million, broken down into affiliation expenses €12.29 million; sponsorship €1.22 million; promotions 48.96; and advertising €34.17 million. Compared to the previous quarter, this expense increased by 1.90% and an annual variation of 2.97%. Advertising presents positive rates compared to the previous quarter and year of 9.73% and 7.65% respectively. Spending on affiliates increases 0.04% compared to the previous quarter and 56.21% compared to the previous year. Spending on sponsorship decreased by -0.12% compared to the previous quarter and increased by 225.15% in the annual rate. Promotions decreased by -2.45% compared to the previous quarter and -1.71% compared to the previous year. In this quarter, the promotions are broken down into bonuses released in prizes €13.50 million and not included in prizes €35.46 million.
The monthly average of active gaming accounts is 1,134,993, which implies a decrease of -2.04% compared to the previous quarter and a positive annual variation of 11.43%. The monthly average of new accounts is 102,804 users, with a quarterly decrease of -7.71% and an annual rate of -2.96%.
