The 2026 FIFA World Cup marked a turning point in how fans engage with sports and digital entertainment. In this opinion piece, Fernando Mora explores how the growing demand for more immersive and interactive experiences is reshaping the future of iGaming, driven by sports content and technological innovation. Drawing on Playradar's experience, Sportradar's casino division, the author shares his perspective on the industry's next stage of evolution.
The FIFA World Cup has always influenced how fans engage with sport, but the 2026 tournament highlighted how player expectations are evolving beyond traditional betting and casino experiences. In my daily work as Business Development Executive at Sportradar Latam, I have seen firsthand how major sporting events accelerate innovation in iGaming, why interactivity has become essential, and how sports content is shaping the next generation of digital entertainment.
The World Cup is unique because it brings together an enormous global audience over several weeks, creating a level of engagement that very few sporting events can match. During the tournament, fans are constantly following matches, discussing predictions, comparing performances, and sharing the emotional journey of their national teams. For our industry, this creates an ideal environment to introduce new entertainment experiences. Rather than simply increasing betting activity, the World Cup raises expectations around how fans want to engage with sports digitally, driving demand for experiences that are interactive, intuitive, and connected to the excitement of the tournament.
Today's players expect much more than a traditional gaming experience. They are already accustomed to interactive digital platforms, personalized content, and realtime engagement across different forms of media. Sport naturally lends itself to this evolution because fans do not simply watch matches, as they predict results, debate possible outcomes, and follow every stage of a competition. Bringing those familiar behaviors into interactive entertainment creates experiences that feel natural rather than forced. That is why we are designing experiences that reward participation, progression, and decision-making throughout the journey, instead of focusing exclusively on the outcome of a game.
Our objective at Playradar when translating the World Cup experience into this new generation of entertainment was not to recreate football itself, but to recreate the emotions that make following a tournament so engaging. We introduced four World Cup-themed titles, including World Football x2026, Football Plinko Pro, Lucky 6 – Football Edition, and Virtual Football World Championship 2026, each inspired by a different aspect of how fans experience football. Some products focused on tournament progression and predictions, while others used instantly recognizable football visuals or data-driven simulations. Together, they demonstrated how sports content, game mechanics, and interactive features can work together to create experiences that feel familiar to football fans while offering something different from traditional casino games.
One of the biggest lessons from the World Cup is that players increasingly value experiences that feel connected to the sports they already follow. The tournament demonstrated that sports content can be used as the foundation for creating more immersive digital experiences through data, competition formats, and interactive mechanics. This broader trend extends well beyond a single tournament, as football remains active throughout the year and other sports present opportunities to develop experiences inspired by live competitions, historical moments, and official sports data. Looking ahead, innovation will increasingly focus on creating entertainment that feels closer to the way fans already consume sport, and I believe experiences built around authentic sports content will play an essential role in the future of iGaming.
