(Santiago).- The online gambling industry in Chile is significantly larger than previously estimated. A report by the North American consulting firm Yield Sec reveals that this market will reach US$3.1 billion in gross gambling revenue by 2024, with 5.4 million Chileans interacting with betting platforms in the last year.
The report also highlights the impact of effective regulation. Based on the size of the Chilean market indicated in the study, the State could collect between US$600 and US$800 million annually if an adequate regulatory framework is established. These figures are 10 times higher than the Ministry of Finance's initial projections, which had estimated revenues of US$50 million.
Carlos Baeza, representative of the Association of Online Betting Platforms (Betano, Coolbet, Betsson, Latamwin, and Betwarrior), highlighted the importance of moving forward with regulation: “This report shows us for the first time, with clear contours, the invisible reality of a market that must be regulated immediately and immediately. We are not talking about a marginal market, but rather a consolidated industry. Regulation is not only necessary, but urgent,” he stated.
Baeza added that regulating online betting platforms would allow for permanent funding of public policies, which is key in the current context of fiscal deficits.
Yield Sec's analysis warns that the success of regulation will depend on its tax structure. Currently, the bill under discussion in Congress proposes a tax burden of 37.6%, well above the international average of 22%.
Ismail Vali, founder and CEO of Yield Sec, warned that “in all the regulated markets we monitor, flawed regulation and high taxes lead to the entry of a new type of gambling operators: illegal and criminal.” He also maintained that “if future regulation misguides its objectives, it will take a market that currently operates in equilibrium and transform it into what we see in many jurisdictions today: a market divided into two industries: one legal and tax-paying, and the other illegal and criminal.”
Baeza points out that correcting the tax structure would even allow for an increase in revenue from US$800 million to US$1 billion annually, ensuring a competitive market and protecting users.
