(Grand Forks).- City officials and tribal leaders discuss tax, infrastructure and business concerns as a $300M casino project is proposed in Grand Forks.

A $300M casino complex proposed in Grand Forks by Turtle Mountain tribe

A proposed casino project in Grand Forks could bring a major economic boost to the region, but logistical concerns remain as city leaders weigh the next steps.

The Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa recently purchased 146 acres of land just west of Interstate 29 and south of a campground, where it hopes to build a $300 million entertainment complex. Plans include a 200-room hotel, an amphitheater, Vegas-style gambling and a family center, creating an estimated 800 jobs.

The city will also examine whether the casino would compete with the Alerus Center, Grand Forks' largest event venue.

"We want to make sure these facilities are complementary — not only to the Alerus Center but also to businesses throughout Grand Forks and the region," Feland said. "This facility should fill a gap in amenities we don’t have in our community."

Unlike typical development projects, the casino requires both state and federal approval. Feland said it will be at least two years before the city knows whether to move forward.

The Grand Forks City Council is expected to discuss the project at its next meeting Monday, Feb 3.
