Atlantic City Casino Workers Push Health Commissioner Nominee on Smoking Ban Stance

Atlantic City casino workers are calling on New Jersey lawmakers to press the state’s health commissioner nominee on his position regarding casino smoking policies during an upcoming confirmation hearing.

The New Jersey Senate Judiciary Committee is set to review the nomination of Dr. Raynard E. Washington to head the Department of Health. In advance of the session, members of Casino Employees Against Smoking Effects (CEASE) have urged senators to question the nominee about whether he supports eliminating the indoor smoking exemption currently permitted in Atlantic City casinos.

According to CEASE, the issue remains a major occupational health concern, as thousands of casino employees continue to be exposed to secondhand smoke while working on gaming floors.

Advocates argue that ending the exemption would align casino workplaces with broader public health protections already in place across much of the state.
