(México DF).- The Government Secretariat (Segob) modified the regulation of the Federal Law on Gambling and Lotteries to establish that new betting centres will only be allowed to operate for a maximum of 15 years.

Casinos and gambling centres will only be allowed to operate for 15 years in Mexico

The Official Journal of the Federation published the decree to update the authorisation, control, surveillance and inspection of games that involve betting, as well as the lottery in all its forms, with the exception of lotteries held by the National Lottery.

The permits for the expansion and operation of cross betting at racetracks, greyhound tracks, frontons, remote betting centres and number or symbol drawing halls shall be valid for a minimum of one year and a maximum of 15 years," states Article 33 of the aforementioned regulation. It is established that there will be no extensions to the permits of betting centres already in operation.

No extensions for those who already have a permit

"The rights of operators with respect to establishments that are currently in operation will continue to be effective until the end of the term of the permits that gave rise to them, not including their extensions," it states. In addition, permits that have not been used by operators will be cancelled.

"The authorisations of operators who are not operating or managing an establishment in operation at the entry into force of this Decree shall be null and void", it is implemented.

Regulation of betting at local fairs

Article 60 was also reformed to establish that the Ministry of the Interior and the governors may agree on the operation of betting at local fairs.

"The Secretariat must grant the permit for the operation of cross betting at fairs, considering the opinion of the person in charge of the executive power or body of the federal entity in question, as well as the authority of the corresponding municipality or mayor's office, so that the applicant can operate the cross betting," it clarifies.
