(Maldonado).- Maldonado local council allowed Grupo Cipriani to build in Punta del Este the highest skyscraper in Latin America, which will be 320 metres high and will be built where Hotel San Rafael was located, in the boulevard of Lorenzo Batlle.

Added to this, a privately run casino will be built and three residential towers will be built at the back of the property that will have a garage for 416 vehicles. One of those towers is the one that will hold the record for the tallest tower, surpassing those of Mexico and Chile, which are 305 and 300 meters respectively. The construction will have amenities such as a spa, hairdresser, outdoor pool, tennis court, gym, health center, etc.

The tentative work schedule, according to the document signed by the Board, is 59 months. However, the Cipriani Group, led by the Venetian businessman Giuseppe Cipriani, promised to finish the hotel 33 months after work began. A month after finishing the hotel, the casino would be installed and, the following month, the first tower.

After Board approval, the plan has 180 days to start. The Egyptian businessman Naguib Sawiris could not meet the deadline and therefore withdrew from the project. However, Pablo Monsuárez, representative of the company Fosara S.A., informed the Public Works Commission that Maldonado that on December 1 everything was ready to start the work, the only thing missing was the approval of the Board.

The opposition is against the project

While the mayor of Maldonado, Enrique Antía, celebrated the approval as great news, the Broad Front questions whether the investment will finally materialize and describes the construction as nonsense in relation to the urban characteristics of the place.

The vote had 22 votes in favor, 21 from ediles of the National Party and 1 from the Colorado Party, while 9 ediles from the Broad Front voted against. "For us it means a total violation of the territorial ordering of Maldonado and the denaturalization of Punta del Este as a resort," said the representative of the Broad Front, Joaquín Garlo. The mayor recalled that in 2018 a lower-height construction was rejected due to its disproportion and expressed his distrust that the white party had proposed increasing the height of the building.
