Efforts to legalize casino gambling in South Carolina have hit a major roadblock

On Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2026, House Majority Leader Davey Hiott recommitted the casino bill to the House Ways and Means Committee, effectively sending it back to the start of the legislative process.

Proponents argued the proposal could generate ongoing revenue for the state without raising taxes by keeping gaming dollars currently spent in neighboring states within South Carolina.

However, opponents, including the Palmetto Family Alliance, warned the legislation could increase predatory gambling and create other social issues.

Lawmakers now face an uncertain timeline for the bill’s future, with supporters vowing to continue pushing for approval while critics urge caution, citing potential impacts on families and local communities. Public hearings and committee discussions could resume in the coming months, keeping the debate alive.
