(Ontario).- Premier Doug Ford unveils ambitious plan to attract mega-casinos, theme parks, and world-class entertainment to revitalize Niagara Falls and boost tourism.
The Ford government is aiming to transform Niagara Falls, Ontario, into what officials are internally calling the “Vegas of the North,” with plans to draw new casinos, theme parks, and entertainment attractions to the city. Premier Doug Ford launched the initiative alongside Mayor Jim Diodati, emphasizing the goal of attracting “more casinos” and specifically targeting large, high-profile casino resorts.
The plan focuses on expanding tourism by adding new food and wine experiences, highlighting cultural events like the Shaw Festival in nearby Niagara-on-the-Lake, and leveraging ongoing infrastructure improvements. Previous projects, such as expanding the QEW, twin-tunneling the Garden City Skyway, and increasing Niagara GO train service, are expected to support the city’s growth.
“All the big casinos in Niagara, I’m making a clear message to you: you’re welcome to Niagara,” Ford said. “We want to double the number of visitors who come to Niagara every year, and we want to double the amount of time they spend in Niagara.”
Ford’s vision includes a Vegas-style mega casino integrated with an entertainment complex, situated near theme parks and other attractions. He also highlighted the potential for multiple new world-class casinos, which would spur the development of new hotels, restaurants, and entertainment venues, creating a comprehensive tourism hub in Niagara Falls.
Ford specifically said he was targeting major American gambling companies.
“All the big casinos in Las Vegas — we’re serious,” he added.
“It’s happening. Get on board. Come and put a proposal in. Come and tell us how you’re going to build a billion-dollar hotel with attractions, with cinemas inside, with live theatre. That’s what we’re looking for.”
The premier listed off a range of potential investments and expansions he wants to see in the region, although it is unclear when they would be delivered and who would fund them.
The 44-page strategy launched Monday envisioned a 3.8-kilometre tram running through Queen Victoria Park, a new observation wheel and the redevelopment of the Niagara Parks Marina.
