(Macau).- Macau has the potential to generate up to MOP20 billion (US$2.5 billion) in gross gaming revenue this month amid soaring momentum in the tourism industry, Sands China’s Wilfred Wong has predicted.

Sands China expects Feb casino revenue to hit USD 2.5B

The rosy picture was painted by Wong, executive vice chairman and executive director of Sands China, earlier this week on the sidelines of a Lunar New Year celebration for the casino operator’s properties.

According to Macao Daily News, Wong said that all hotels under Sands China were “fully booked” for the first few days of the week-long festival, which concludes this weekend.

He cited the recent estimate of 120,000 tourists per day made by the Tourism Office as a potential driver.

It is close to the 2019 level, he stressed.

In December last year, the average occupancy rate of hotel rooms rose by 43.1 percentage points year on year to nearly 86 per cent, as per the Statistics and Census Service.

Wong expressed his confidence that the tally for February could inch up further.

His prediction is in line with that of brokerage Morgan Stanley, which believes that February casino revenue could hit the MOP20 billion mark.
