(Virginia).- Apowerful state Senate committee killed a proposal on Thursday evening that would have allowed Petersburg residents to hold a referendum on hosting a casino in the city.
“I was thunderstruck as to what occurred,” Morrissey said in an interview after the committee meeting. He said he plans to discuss the vote with the Democratic caucus and will try to revive the bill.
Morrissey has said allowing Richmond to vote again would be undemocratic and redundant.
Last year, Morrissey began exploring how Petersburg could potentially take Richmond’s spot, hoping that it could help revitalize the city of approximately 33,000 people in his district.
The committee’s vote to defeat the bill was 9-7. The bill drew support and opposition from both Democrats who control the committee and Republicans.
