Vietnam’s Dalat pushes for new casino, street market to boost economy

(Vietnam).- Authorities in Dalat in Vietnam’s Central Highlands is proposing development of a casino as part of a plan to rejuvenate the city’s evening economy, local media has revealed.

According to a report by VN Express, the casino would be developed alongside a new 900-meter pedestrian-only night market, aimed at replacing the current market which is described as crowded during weekends and holidays. It would also be located near the Valley of Love, a popular destination for newlyweds due to its spectacular mountain views.

The plan is currently awaiting review and approval by Lam Dong Province authorities, the report added. However, it is not yet known whether local authorities would make it a foreigner-only casino or apply to be considered as one of a handful of casinos nationwide potentially allowed to welcome Vietnamese guests.

Dalat is also seen as being difficult to access for international visitors, potentially limiting the foreigner-only option.

Only one casino in Vietnam, Corona Resort & Casino in Phu Quoc, has been allowed to welcome locals under a three-year trial program launched in 2019, with the Ministry of Finance currently pushing for that program to be extended and expanded to include two new casinos – located in Da Nang City and Khanh Hoa Province.

Under the trial, locals must be 21, earn a minimum of VND10 million (US$430) and pay an entry fee to gamble.
