(Madrid).- The Directorate General for Gambling Regulation (DGOJ) convened representatives from seven European countries—Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, the United Kingdom, and Spain—in Madrid to discuss the main regulatory challenges facing the sector and to strengthen international cooperation.
European Meeting of Gambling Regulators in Madrid
The meeting, chaired by Director General Mikel Arana, served as a technical forum where authorities shared experiences and common concerns: combating illegal gambling, protecting consumers, and preventing money laundering.
During the sessions, Spain opened the debate with a presentation on the role of affiliates in promoting unauthorized operators.
Germany and Italy presented joint strategies for blocking payments to illegal sites, while France discussed the use of artificial intelligence in user management and potential conflicts of interest in sports betting. Austria, for its part, detailed the progress of the new European legislative package on anti-money laundering and its evaluation by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF).
This meeting served as a prelude to the 1st International Gaming Congress: The Social Impact of Gaming, held in Madrid on November 13 and 14. Regulators from Italy, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Spain will participate in the panel “Challenges and Perspectives of Gaming Regulation in Europe,” where regulatory projects and trends will be addressed.
However, the limited presence of regional regulators and representatives from the private sector, key players in the control of land-based gambling and the development of the online sector, is noteworthy. Strategic territories such as Ceuta and Melilla are also not among the speakers, despite their growing technological and fiscal relevance.
