(Malta).-The company temporarily closed part of its Malta headquarters during July and August to help ease pressure on the country's electricity grid amid record summer temperatures.
Temporary Office Closure Cuts Energy Consumption
SiGMA reduces its electricity consumption by approximately 33% by temporarily closing the third floor of its headquarters in Balzan, Malta, throughout July and August. The initiative aims to support the national power grid during the peak summer season, when soaring temperatures have driven electricity demand to record levels.
The events and media company said the two-month measure is intended to lower its energy usage while contributing to broader efforts to reduce strain on the country's electrical infrastructure.
Supporting the National Grid
Malta has been experiencing an intense heatwave, with exceptionally high temperatures increasing electricity consumption and contributing to power outages affecting both homes and businesses.
According to SiGMA, the decision aligns with government efforts to ease pressure on the electricity network during periods of extreme heat.
Commitment to ESG Goals
SiGMA Group CEO Emily Micallef said the initiative reflects the company's commitment to responsible business practices.
"We believe everyone has a responsibility to do their part. Even the smallest contribution can make a difference, and by reducing our energy consumption during peak summer months, we also hope to reinforce our commitment to a strong ESG strategy."
Record-Breaking Summer in Europe
The initiative comes as Malta recorded its hottest July day on record, with temperatures reaching 43.3°C, surpassing the previous record of 42.7°C set in 2023.
The extreme weather has been part of a broader European heatwave. June 2026 was the hottest ever recorded in Western Europe and the second hottest across the continent, with countries including France, England, and Spain also experiencing exceptionally high temperatures.
