(Macau).- Macau’s gross gaming revenue reached MOP15.57 billion (US$1.93 billion) in May, up a whopping 365.9 per cent compared to the same period last year, the city’s gaming watchdog announced on Thursday.

Casino revenue hits USD 1.93 B in May, highest since Covid ended

According to data from the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau, last month’s tally accounts for a 5.7 per cent increase on April.

The May performance – the highest since Covid curbs ended – has taken the accumulated revenue for the first five months of the year to a total of MOP64.93 billion – versus 2019’s MOP125.7 billion.

It also represented some 49.9 per cent of a target of MOP130 billion set by Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng in the government’s budget for the financial year of 2023.

The positive result for May also reflects the impact of the May Day holiday, which attracted over 490,000 visitors to the city in five days.

Macau was the last market in the region to reopen post-COVID-19, in January, but it quickly managed to regain its status not only as the top casino jurisdiction in Asia but also surpassing the whole of Nevada in terms of gross gaming revenue in the first quarter of 2023, despite accounting still only about half of pre-COVID levels (2019).
