(Macau).- Macau authorities have teamed up with the city’s six gaming operators to provide over 1,400 jobs for local jobseekers this month, about a week after the city’s leader called on jobless citizens to return to work amid an emerging shortage of manpower.

The Labour Affairs Bureau said that it would roll out six job matching sessions with all the six gaming companies in Macau in March, with a total of 1,434 openings on offer.

The aim is to alleviate the strain on human resources at a time when new leisure facilities are coming into operation against a gradual recovery in the tourism sector, the authorities explained.

The joint recruitment drive also comes about a week after Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng appealed the city’s unemployed population to go back to the workplace post-Covid.

The openings that the gaming operators are looking to fill are in the fields of food and beverages, concierge, security, internet security, and strategy analysis, according to a government statement.

According to the Statistics and Census Service, there were a total of 361,000 in work as of the end of January, with about 78 per cent of them locals.

The latest jobless rate and underemployment rate for Macau citizens stand at 4.3 per cent and 3.2 per cent, down 0.2 percentage points and 0.7 percentage points respectively.
