(Macau).- Macau casinos have witnessed a staggering 94 percent surge in the average wager per player during the recent Golden Week period compared to October 2019, according to a survey conducted by Citigroup on the premium mass market.
A site visit carried out by analysts George Choi and Ryan Cheung on 5 October unveiled that despite a 44 percent reduction in gamblers, the total wagers reached an impressive HKD15.1 million (MOP15.53 million/ US$1.93 million).
The figure is only 3 percent lower than the all-time high recorded in the past six years since the surveying began, which stood at HKD15.5 million, emphasised the analysts.
“Note that it took a total of 928 Premium Mass players seen in February 2019 to reach the ~HKD15.5 million total wager observed,” highlighted Choi and Cheung, underscoring the significant contrast with the current survey where only 508 players were observed.
The survey identified a record-high number of 33 high rollers, often referred to as ‘blue whales,’ who are defined as players betting HKD100,000 per hand or more. This figure surpassed the previous record of 27 whales seen in February 2019.
Moreover, the quality of these whales has shown significant improvement, with an average wager of HKD191,364 among the 33 whales observed in October 2023. This represents an increase of HKD33,625 compared to the pre-Covid levels.
Besides, the average wager per player stood at HKD29,633, in comparison to the 2019 level of HKD15,242, with minimum bets being 11 percent higher than in the same period in 2019.
“The player quality at the grind mass areas is also improving,” stated the analysts, highlighting the positive trend in the overall gambling experience.
