(Macau).- Macau welcomed some 451,000 tourist arrivals during the seven-day Chinese New Year Golden Week, between January 21 and 17, the Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) indicated, stressing that visitor figures have surpassed their expectations.
The figure signals a three-fold jump (297 per cent increase) from last year, however it still only accounts for 38 per cent of what was recorded in the pre-pandemic 2019 Chinese New Year Golden Week.
On the third day of the Chinese New Year (January 24), the number of visitors exceeded 90 thousand, setting a new daily record since the beginning of the pandemic, a statement from MGTO added. Of the 451,000 visitors, 265,000 came from mainland China, while 165,000 came from Hong Kong.
Tourism authorities also noted that the average hotel occupancy rate was 85.7 per cent with a 92.1 per cent peak on the third day.
“The satisfactory tourism figures over the Spring Festival Golden Week mirrors visitors’ high intentions to travel to Macao during Chinese New Year and opt for a first-hand experience of the city’s glamour in “tourism +”. The bustling scene reflects a positive outlook for the tourism and related industries,” MGTO stressed.
