(Macau).- Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture Ao Ieong U has called on gaming companies to provide support for local talent in sports, culture, arts, and cinema under new gaming contracts.
The secretary made the appeal during a question and answer session with lawmakers at the Legislative Assembly Tuesday.
Talking to lawmakers who urged measures to cultivate local talent, the secretary emphasized the need for gaming companies to come up with collaborations with talented locals in the sporting and creative sectors.
She also revealed that the Education and Youth Affairs Bureau had signed agreements with the city’s six gaming companies to provide training opportunities for Macau residents.
According to the official, some gaming operators have also expressed interest in participating in revitalisation projects targeting neighbourhoods near Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro, or colloquially known as San Ma Lo.
Authorities are currently exploring the possibility of creating spin-offs of the campaign that pedestrianised the busy road in downtown Macau during the Lunar New Year holiday earlier this year.
More details will be announced if a conclusion is made, the secretary said.
The push for local talent development is seen as an important step towards diversifying the city’s gaming-dependent economy.
Cooperation between the government and gaming operators is intensifying under the new 10-year gaming concessions.
