(Macau).- Visitor arrivals in Macau reached 11.6 million in the first half of 2023, according to Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes, director of the Macao Government Tourism Office.
The government recently announced that as many as 9.4 million visitors were attracted to the SAR between January and May.
It means that June saw about 2.2 million in the city, or an average of 80,000 visitors per day.
It was a significant leap from a daily average of 45,000 early this year after Covid-related immigration curbs were removed.
Official records show that over 110,000 travelled to Macau on a daily basis in summer before the pandemic.
The official said that mainland Chinese and Hong Kong visitors had rebounded to nearly 60 per cent and 90 per cent of pre-pandemic levels respectively.
However, foreign visitors have only reached just over 20 per cent of 2019 levels.
Speaking to media on the sidelines of the Asian IR Expo + Global Gaming Expo (G2E) Asia 2023 event on Tuesday, Fernandes reiterated the need to increase efforts to lure overseas visitors to a city that is now more focused on non-gaming and family-friendly offerings.
However, the tourism industry is still facing a shortage of manpower to accommodate the high volume of visitors expected for the forthcoming summer holiday, she said.
“We are looking to organise more events in the second half of the year by taking advantage of the upcoming travel season in order to meet an annual visitor arrival target of 24 million,” the official said.
