(Brasilia).- Ahead of Football World Cup, Brazil's government will impose strict advertising rules on online betting companies starting next week, Finance Minister Dario Durigan said on Thursday, requiring health warnings and banning claims that betting offers easy money.
New Advertising Mandates to Protect Bettors
The government will enforce warning labels on all gambling advertisements to highlight addiction risks and potential financial losses, Durigan informed reporters.
Strict Restrictions on Promotions and Endorsements
The upcoming regulations will also bar operators from marketing online betting as a quick source of income and prohibit expert commentators from encouraging wagers.
Accountability Across the Marketing Supply Chain
Authorities plan to penalize not only the betting operators themselves but also any third-party advertisers that amplify content promoting gambling, according to the minister.
Immediate Compliance and Strategic Enforcement Timeline
These new restrictions will come into force on July 17, exactly two days prior to the World Cup final—a major sporting event heavily backed by betting sponsorships.
Crackdown on Unlicensed Platforms
This move follows a decree signed last month by President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, which grants the government the authority to freeze assets belonging to illegal online betting firms.
