(Alberta).- The Alberta government is calling for proposals from organizations that can provide additional support for people affected by gambling-related harms, with funding tied to revenue from the province’s newly regulated iGaming market.

Alberta Seeks New Gambling Addiction Services Following iGaming Launch

Funding to Come From Regulated iGaming Revenue

Alberta is seeking expressions of interest from organizations capable of delivering new services and support programs for people experiencing gambling-related addiction.

The initiative comes shortly after the province launched its regulated online gaming market, with the government planning to use a portion of iGaming revenue to finance social responsibility programs.

Under Alberta’s framework, the province will receive 20% of revenues generated by private operators. One percent of that amount has been earmarked for initiatives such as gambling addiction services and public education campaigns.

Additional Support for Problem Gambling

The new programs are intended to complement existing services provided through Recovery Alberta, including a 21-day residential treatment program and established gambling support hotlines.

According to the Mental Health and Addiction Ministry, the government is looking for organizations that can offer enhanced assistance to individuals and families dealing with problem gambling.

The province's call for proposals highlights the broader impact gambling-related harm can have, including consequences for mental and physical health, relationships, financial stability, employment, housing and overall wellbeing.

Online Gambling Brings New Challenges

Alberta's government has argued that a regulated iGaming market will provide greater protection for consumers and help move players away from unregulated and black-market operators.

However, Service Alberta Minister Dale Nally has also acknowledged that the expansion of legal online gambling could lead to an increase in gambling addiction.

The government's request for proposals specifically points to the rapid growth of online gambling as creating additional challenges for preventing and addressing problem gambling.

Operators Continue to Enter the Market

Nearly two dozen private sportsbooks and online casinos were operating when Alberta's regulated market launched last month. Five additional operators have joined the market in the weeks since.

The government says the new responsible gambling services are intended to strengthen the support network available as the regulated sector expands.

Organizations interested in submitting proposals have until September 10, 2026, to apply. In the meantime, Albertans seeking assistance with gambling-related problems can contact 211 Alberta.
