Bill in São Paulo to punish those who advertise illegal gambling sites

(São Paulo) - A bill introduced by federal deputy Kim Kataguiri (União-SP) aims to punish the advertising of illegal or unauthorised gambling sites in Brazil.

Bill in São Paulo to punish those who advertise illegal gambling sites

The bill, presented last Wednesday (26 February) in the Chamber of Deputies, provides for one to four years in prison and the payment of a fine for those who promote these sites. The punishment is doubled if it is done by a digital influencer or public figure.

In the justification for the bill, the MP wrote that gambling advertising ‘has often targeted vulnerable groups, such as children, teenagers and people with financial difficulties, who are attracted by the promise of easy winnings’.

‘Manipulative tactics’

Kim Kataguiri's bill criminalises the dissemination of illegal gambling sites and provides for 8 years in jail for influencers.

It states that digital influencers ‘use their position of influence to attract gamblers, often resorting to manipulative and non-transparent tactics’.

According to the MEP, ‘influencers who promote this type of games end up masking the risks involved, presenting them as recreational and safe activities (...). This behaviour contributes to the normalisation of gambling, leading many to underestimate the risks and possible negative consequences associated with it’.
