(Nebraska).- The Hastings’ Planning Commission voted 4-3 this week to not recommend a new casino and racetrack in the city.
The Hastings Planning Commission voted 'no' by a 4-3 count for its recommendation on whether to build a new casino in the town. The close decision from the commissioners is simply the zoning recommendation for the city council to consider as part of its final decision.
Lisa Parnell-Rowe is the director of development services in Hastings. She says the planned area for the casino is currently zoned as residential. “A lot of our citizens, in fact, they have made up some signs and have, sort of, a tagline that they are ‘for a casino, but not in that location.,” Parnell-Rowe said.
She said the company wanting to build in Hastings faces numerous challenges putting a casino in the proposed location. A no vote from the city council wouldn’t entirely close the door to one in Hastings, but it would for the current proposal. Currently, there is a race track inside the Adams County Fairgrounds on the other side of town.
The Hastings city council will make the final decision on this proposal February 28th.
