President of Brazilian Senate to postpone the gambling legalization proposal to October

(Brasilia).- The President of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), has signalled that he is in no hurry to put the Gambling Bill on the agenda.

President of Brazilian Senate to postpone the gambling legalization proposal to October

According to reports made to CNN, Pacheco has indicated that his priorities for the second half of the year are the renegotiation of state debts and compensation for the payroll tax exemption.

The two issues were also listed as priorities for August by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) in a meeting with the senator last week.

As a result, the proposal to legalise gambling in the country, which has already been approved by the Chamber of Deputies, will have to be postponed until after the first round of municipal elections in October.

The postponement of the debate is also due to pressure from the evangelical caucus, which has prepared studies to dissuade government senators from voting in favour of the initiative.
The argument is that gambling encourages addiction in the country. In addition, the Ministry of Justice fears that the measure could encourage money laundering.

Lula, however, has already stated in an interview that he tends to sanction the proposal, which has the support of both the economic team and the political wing.

In the long term, the authorisation is expected to raise USD 400 million for the federal government.
