Keys to avoid frauds on gambling platforms, by ProntoPaga

The growth of online gambling in Peru has brought with it opportunities, but also risks for users and businesses. With an industry that mobilised more than usd 124 billion in 2023, according to data from the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur), cybercriminals have found in this sector a new target to commit fraud and scams.

According to Evans Concha, CTO & Founder of ProntoPaga, gambling platforms are often the target of various scams that put the security of users and their financial data at risk. ‘Users' lack of knowledge about security measures makes them vulnerable to these crimes. Education and the use of secure technologies are key to reducing these risks,’ says the specialist.

He also comments on four of the most common scams on gambling platforms:

  • Phishing: Fraudulent emails or messages that imitate legitimate platforms to steal credentials and bank details.
  • Identity theft: Misuse of personal information to gain unauthorised access to gambling accounts.
  • Game manipulation: Fraudulent sites that alter algorithms to prevent legitimate winnings.
  • Illegal platforms: Unlicensed bookmakers operating without regulation, exposing users to financial fraud.

On the other hand, it provides five recommendations to prevent scams on such platforms:

  1. Verify the legality of the platform: Before registering with any online gambling house, it is essential to ensure that it is licensed by Mincetur or other regulatory bodies.
  2. Avoid suspicious links: According to the ProntoPaga expert, many scams start with fake emails or messages that redirect to fraudulent sites. It is always recommended to go directly to the official website of the platform.
  3. Use secure payment methods: Opt for recognised payment gateways and avoid sharing banking information on sites of dubious origin.
  4. Set up two-step authentication: Activating this mechanism in the user account adds an extra layer of protection against unauthorised access.
  5. Check reviews and references: Flores recommends reviewing other users' experiences can help identify potential fraud or unfair practices on gambling platforms.

‘Due to the increase in security risks, users should be alert and adopt these good security practices to avoid falling into scams, while the industry should continue to strengthen its protection mechanisms,’ adds Concha.
