(Michigan).- While April’s revenue decline hit double digits, Michigan online casino operators are likely not worried. March 2024 numbers were the highest in state history, so matching those figures in April was virtually impossible.
iGaming gross revenue was up a massive 21% in comparison to April 2023 and this past month’s total was the second-highest in state history. Dating back to Michigan’s online casino launch in 2021, revenue has topped $190 million only twice: in April and March of this year.
Key takeaways
- Monthly online casino revenue was down 10.4%.
- April’s revenue total was the second-highest in state history
- Yearly revenue was up 21%
- Revenue could top $200 million three more times by the end of the year
April Michigan online casino revenue was historic
April is typically a letdown month for casino markets across the country. March is a high-traffic month for online and in-person casinos, so it’s usually difficult for April to get anywhere close to March’s revenue numbers.
That being said, Michigan´s online casinos had an impressive April. MotorCity Casino topped $50 million for just the second time in April, indicating that it may be reaching its maturity point after three years of growing its customer base.
MGM Grand Detroit, the leader in Michigan online casino revenue, posted a top-10 month. Bay Mills, the state’s third-biggest iGaming revenue earner, saw its win eclipse $38 million for only the second time since 2021.
While April’s revenue decline hit double digits, Michigan online casino operators are likely not worried. Michigan´s March 2024 numbers were the highest in state history, so matching those figures in April was virtually impossible.
Moving forward, it’s possible we could see more record-breaking months.
If 2024 follows 2023’s revenue growth patterns, we could see several firsts:
- September, October and November eclipse $200 million
- Revenue hits $200 million in back-to-back months
- Every month in the year posts at least $180 million in revenue
In the short term, expect to see a revenue dip in May before numbers start to climb in July and August. September is on target to usher in the second $200 million month in state history.
