(Macau) Hotel occupancy rate for this year’s summer season is expected to exceed 90 per cent, local hotel industry insider said.
Lou Chi Leong, director of the Macau Hoteliers & Innkeepers Association, told Chinese language news outlet Macau Daily that the sector held optimistic views on the forthcoming summer, particularly from mid-July to the end of August when hotels are anticipated to welcome a significant influx of guests.
He indicated that as hotel room supply in Macau had increased post-pandemic, a 90 per cent occupancy rate would signify that the hotel industry’s recovery had surpassed pre-pandemic levels.
According to the latest data from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC), Macau boasted a total of 143 hotel establishments as of May 2024, which represented a 13 per cent hike from the previous year.
The total of guest rooms grew by 9.3 per cent to 47,000, with the average occupancy rate up by 4.9 percentage points year-on-year to 83.6 per cent.
Regarding hotel room rates, Mr. Lou stated that prices would remain rational during the summer, without significant surges.
Also, he added that hotels would launch various promotions and discounts, with the aim of attracting guests during the summer holiday period.
For the first five months of the year, the average occupancy rate for guest rooms increased by 7.7 percentage points year-on-year to 84.3 per cent.
The number of guests also experienced substantial growth, rising by 25 per cent to 6,135,000. The average length of stay remained unchanged at 1.7 nights.
