(Macau).- Secretary for Economy and Finance has resigned from his post citing personal reasons, the government announced Thursday. His departure comes just before the chief executive’s first overseas trip to Portugal with a business delegation.
Tai, who assumed the role in December 2024 after serving as director of the Economic Bureau, oversaw Macau’s gaming industry, including the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ). His tenure coincided with efforts to diversify the city’s economy and manage developments in the casino sector.
In a statement, Tai expressed gratitude to the central government and Chief Executive Sam Hou Fai for their trust and support, noting that he had formally requested to step down earlier. He pledged to continue supporting the administration and Macau’s development initiatives.
Chief Executive Hou Fai acknowledged Tai’s contributions, highlighting his leadership in shaping economic and financial policy in line with government priorities.
The resignation comes at a pivotal moment, as Macau prepares for Hou Fai’s first overseas mission since taking office, aimed at strengthening ties with Portugal.
The government confirmed that the process of nominating a successor has begun. Until a new appointment is approved by central authorities, Hou Fai will temporarily assume the responsibilities of the economy and finance portfolio.
Macau, a special administrative region of China, remains the world’s largest gambling hub and the only place in the country where casino gaming is legally permitted.
