Portugal hits new high sports betting volume in Q4 2023

(Lisbon).- Online sports wagering reached a new peak with a record handling of €532.1 million in the final quarter of 2023, marking the year as the most successful to date, according to the Portuguese Tourism Gaming Regulation and Inspection Service.

The year 2023 continued its increasing trend in the last months (532.1 MoM), after the third (390.5 MoM) and second (357.6 MoM) were slightly lower than the first quarter (441.4 MoM).

In the last five years, this sector has accounted for almost six thousand ME of turnover (5,958 ME), the equivalent of the income of tourist accommodation throughout 2023.

This amount corresponds, over the same period, to 896.6 ME of gross revenue, that is the difference between the total amount of the bets and the amount awarded in prizes.

Once again, 2023 was the most profitable year, with 324.4 ME, and the first quarter was the most profitable, with gross revenues of 85.7 ME - the fourth quarter was 72.8 ME.

According to reports from the Portuguese Tourism Gaming Regulation and Inspection Service, gross revenues from sports betting amounted to 107.5 ME in 2019, 161.9 ME in 2020, 251.1 ME in 2021 and 297.2 ME in 2022.

Still in relation to the last quarter of last year, football was the favourite sport of bettors, with 74.7%, again beating basketball (10.8%) and tennis (9.7%), while the others were the subject of 4.8% of bets.

The Champions League was the competition with the most football bets in the last three months of 2023 (10.2%), slightly ahead of the English League (10.1%) and the Portuguese I Liga (9.9%).
