(Brasilia).- The Brazilian prosecutor's office begins new investigations into a network accused of fixing matches, including in the first division. The Avaí club would have been offered $160,000 dollars to allow itself to be won by a wide result.
A Brazilian prosecutor's office launched this Tuesday a new phase of the operation against a network accused of fixing soccer matches to obtain profits from sports betting.
The new investigations, led by the Goiás prosecutor's office, include eight search warrants and seizure of evidence in homes in several cities in the country and expanded the investigations to seven soccer matches, including one in the first division (Avaí-Flamengo), played last year.
According to information released by local media, members of the mafia offered $160,000 to Avaí players to lose the match by a wide margin.
Avaí won that match, played in November 2022, 2-1, but started the match losing with an own goal, although the authorities have not clarified whether that goal is under investigation.
Today's operation is a branch of Operations Maximum Penalty I and II, launched in February and April 2023, respectively.
These first phases of the investigation have been skipped so far with the presentation of three complaints received by the Judiciary, with 32 people accused of the crimes of belonging to a criminal organization and corruption in the sports field.
The criminal group was supposedly dedicated to attracting professional players by offering them large sums of money to receive yellow or red cards during matches, to commit penalties, with the aim of the network earning money on sports betting websites.
