The current racing license is only good for one year, but the casino has filed a request to renew its license. The public was given a chance to weigh in at a town hall meeting on Monday.

We actually intend to be good listeners today so that we can understand the community’s position with respect to the proposal,” said Cathy Judd-Stein, chairwoman of the Massachusetts Gaming Commission. Numerous people spoke in favor of the live racing license, including the Plainville fire and police chiefs.

They noted that money brought in from the casino has gone toward a brand-new Town Hall and a state-of-the-art public safety complex.

"Everyone sees the positive effects and not the negative effects to having a business like that in the town, and we've partnered great with the town, the fire, the police," said Steve O'Toole, director of racing at Plainridge Park Casino. While no one showed up at Monday's hearing to oppose the license, members of the community have pushed back on the proposal before.

Town leaders said they believe that many of the concerns that residents had have now been addressed.

The Gaming Commission will have to make a decision on the license and the fate of live racing at Plainridge Park by Nov. 15.
