Michigan Gaming Regulator Warns Bettors Ahead of Super Bowl LX: Use Only Licensed Sportsbooks

(Detroit).- As Super Bowl LX approaches, the Michigan Gaming Control Board has issued a public reminder urging residents to place wagers responsibly and exclusively through state-licensed sportsbooks, citing risks linked to unregulated and offshore betting platforms.
With Super Bowl LX just days away, the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) is reinforcing its message on safe and responsible wagering, calling on residents to avoid unlicensed operators and stick to platforms authorized by the regulator.
MGCB Executive Director Henry Williams emphasized that major sporting events often drive increased betting activity, making consumer protection a priority for the Board.
“Super Bowl weekend brings excitement and energy for football fans across Michigan,” Williams said. “We want everyone to enjoy the game safely and responsibly, and the best way to do that is by wagering only with licensed operators approved by the MGCB. Betting through unauthorized offshore sites or any other unlicensed entities puts your money—and personal information—at serious risk.”
The Risks of Unregulated Betting
According to the MGCB, only authorized sportsbook operators are subject to regulatory oversight designed to ensure fair play, secure payment processing and access to responsible gaming safeguards. In contrast, offshore or illegal platforms may advertise attractive odds but leave bettors vulnerable to identity theft, withheld winnings and other financial losses.
The regulator noted that licensed operators must also provide players with tools to manage their activity, including deposit and wagering limits, time controls and self-exclusion options. Michigan residents can additionally access statewide self-exclusion programs through the Responsible Gaming Database and the Disassociated Persons List for Detroit’s commercial casinos.
Responsible Gaming Guidance for Super Bowl LX
Ahead of one of the most heavily wagered sporting events of the year, the MGCB outlined several recommendations for bettors:
Set a Budget: Wager only what you can afford to lose and view sports betting as entertainment rather than a source of income.
Use Licensed Operators: Verify approved sportsbooks through the MGCB website and avoid offshore or unregulated markets.
Know the Rules: Understand betting odds, wager types and game rules before placing a bet.
Use Responsible Gaming Tools: Take advantage of limits, self-exclusion features and other safeguards available on authorized platforms.
The Board is also directing residents to additional resources at Michigan.gov/MGCB and DontRegretTheBet.org. Those seeking guidance may contact the MGCB Responsible Gaming Section at 888-223-3044.
“Enjoy the thrill of the game, but do it safely,” Williams added. “By sticking with regulated operators, Michigan bettors can protect their money, their data, and themselves while keeping Super Bowl Sunday fun and worry-free.”
The MGCB reiterated that gambling is intended solely for entertainment purposes and encouraged anyone experiencing gambling-related harm to seek confidential, 24/7 support through 1-800-GAMBLER or 800gambler.org.
