The United States Supreme Court opens the door to sports betting
⏱ 1 min read
(España).- The United States Supreme Court has published its long-awaited opinion in the case of New Jersey vs. NCAA, stating that the Professional and Amateur Sport Protection Act (PASPA) from 1992, which prohibited sports betting in all but four US states, is unconstitutional and basically repealed it.
This means that the states that did not have sports betting in their jurisdiction until today, such as New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York and many others, can now move forward and legislate laws to regulate both land-based and online sports betting. Some of these states have already drafted such legislation ahead of this anticipated ruling, with other mobilizing just now, but we expect that a good number of US states will now expedite their legislative efforts, aiming to facilitate online sports betting in the future.
The decision of the Supreme Court has generated spectacular increases in the price of gaming companies that offer sports betting among its product portfolio. In this sense, 888 Holdings is the only licensed gaming company operating in the four states (Nevada Oregon, Delaware and Montana) that to date regulate bets. 888 Holdings is listed on the London Stock Exchange and currently closes at 317 pounds per share.
