Trend Analysis Match-Fixing 2025: More Athletes Betting on Their Own Competitions

(Den Haag).- The number of reports of possible match-fixing in 2025 remained roughly the same as in 2024. However, within those reports a change can be observed: gambling operators reported more cases of athletes betting on their own competitions, something that had not occurred in 2024. This was announced by the Dutch Gambling Authority (Ksa) in its annual trend analysis on match-fixing.
Gambling operators are required to prevent match-fixing as much as possible. They can do this, for example, by not offering bets on high-risk matches. When an operator suspects match-fixing, they can report it to the Sports Betting Intelligence Unit (SBIU) of the Ksa. In recent years, the Ksa has actively worked to raise awareness about the importance of making such reports.
In 2025, the Ksa received 12 reports of match-fixing from 9 different license holders, compared to 13 reports the year before. Notably, 4 of these reports concerned betting on the athletes’ own competitions, a category that did not appear in 2024. In response, the Ksa focused more in 2025 on preventive education for athletes, informing them about what is and is not allowed, and the risks involved.
Last year, the Ksa published the guideline “Commitment to Integrity” to provide operators with additional tools to combat match-fixing. In addition, continuous research was conducted in 2025 into the sports betting offerings of various operators. This research resulted in several warnings and an enforcement order with penalty payments for prohibited offerings.
