SAGSE TALKS offered a new talk dedicated to the Peruvian market

The event, which was for free and available by registration and opened to the whole sector, was dedicated to Peru. The main participants were: Eng. Manuel San Román Benavente, General Director of Casinos and Slots of Peru, SONAJA President, Fernando Calderón Castro, APEJA President Constante Traverso, Gonzalo Pérez, CEO of Apuesta Total, Karen Sierra-Hughes, GLI Director of Government Relationships and Business Development for Latin America, Caribbean and US, Juan José Mantese (Partner and Operating Manager for Latin America, Meridian Gaming).

The Moderador was Pablo Zuppi – Partner and Director of Yogonet Gaming News.

As in the previous edition, it counted with the participation of Fernando Polti (Consultant at Global Wizards), Alan Burak (VP of Monografie) and JD Duarte, CEO of Betcris, anticipated the future edition of the event, scheduled for the Mexican market.

Constante Traverso: "Peru is a complex country. We have 10 years of permanent growth from different types of operations. I wanted to give the message that differentiates us from other countries: The strengths that Peru has to face the pandemic. In Peru there is neither inflation nor devaluation. We have a robust and stable economy for 20 years, a modern constitutional framework. There is exchange freedom and foreign investment. We also have excellent regulation. We have 100% formality, thanks to the excellent work of the regulator (prevention of washing, pathological gambling). That added to the fact that it is a mature market, and culturally speaking, the game is part of the idiosyncrasy of the Peruvian citizen. I believe that with all these characteristics we will be able to face a reactivation in the coming months. It will take time, a lot depends on the health issue. The government's approach is reasonable: establish a protocol and wait for the right moment to reopen our operations."

Fernando Calderon: "It is a very hard situation for our sector. There have been various meetings with the state. We are in the tourism sector, one of the hardest hit. It depends on how the state can alleviate this disease, and how to live with it until a drug or vaccine comes. The issue of health is the most important. It was communicated to the world when we were excluded from a financial bailout. We are going to pass this situation. Yesterday there was a conversation with the Minister of Tourism where there was talk of a special revival plan that is being evaluated by the council of ministers and the ministry of economy and finance. Hopefully it can come, because we are responsible for many investments, many jobs, suppliers, etc. We all must shake hands to overcome this difficult situation, all united".

Jano Valderrama: "The message that the government is giving to the slot machines is different from that of up to 2 weeks ago. Now he says that the slot operators are responsible, that they pay taxes, that they have a workload, and he also supported Manuel San Román's management, since he said that the system is controlled and well regulated. The state is recognizing us as part of something. We all have to work to give a better image, through public opinion and the media, so that all operators succeed as a block. This state of emergency can serve to get stronger."

Gonzalo Pérez:"We have 405 stores nationwide, focused on retail. We had a rather aggressive expansion plan, but let's see how it turns out after the crisis. This has made us become drivers of the economy. We have grown to have up to 1000 people working with us. The pandemic has led us to reformulate our strategy. We are reconfiguring our business. An interesting phenomenon occurred: Customers who were only retail, and are now forced to be online only. Some will return to retail and others will stay in a combination of both. We have found a lot of commitment from the staff. "
Juanjo Mantese: "We have 50 stores in Lima, since 2016, with 120 employees. We dropped the retail, which has a very important preponderance, and at the same time sports fell, which made the blow bigger. We have very strong struggles with landlords. In Eastern Europe, where we reopened last week, revenues are still less than 50%. We are operators, we believe in the operation, there is a large mass of people who know us from retail and from there migrate to online. We are trying to stay and subsist, with the support of the employees, trying to reopen as soon as possible."

Duarte: "We have been in Peru for 13 years, with physical places. Our strategy has always been to bring people from physical places to the Internet. We started with other verticals such as online casino and we have had to reinforce that part. "Duarte proposes a deal to the other operators to extend to Peru the proposal to bring their retail clients online."

Karen Sierra: "Operators are realizing the importance of having a technology partner that integrates new gaming content. Peru has the flexibility of content to deliver that gaming offering to customers. Rapid response is what the operator needs Educate the players, the clients, in new types of games and sports. "

Meanwhile, Pablo Zuppi asked the regulator about the demand for a more specific and modern regulation in relation to online gambling. "Do you think that this situation drives the possibility of analyzing an online regulation in the coming months?"

San Román: "We meet in a new meeting with the government on the subject of free trade agreements that are being requested for the formation of companies in Peru. We have to do that with the Ministry of Economy and Finance, which is now engaged in the coronavirus. "

Then he added: "All retail stores can adapt many of the recommendations that we are giving in the biosafety protocol, to protect workers and customers."

Then he highlighted: "Online in Peru has grown a lot. There is already a specific rule that allows the sale of lotteries and sports betting in Peru. It will be the first game of chance that can be offered after the emergency."
