(Sofia).- 2024 marked another dynamic year for the iGaming industry, driven by rapid advancements in technology, evolving regulatory landscapes, and comprehensive marketing strategies worldwide. In this edition, we’ll explore the most significant developments in these areas and imply our expectations for 2025.

iGaming Overview: 2024 Highlights and 2025 Expectations, by EGT Digital

Regulations

One of the aspects that is constantly changing in the world of iGaming is the legal situation. While some countries impose stricter regulations to protect the players, others are taking huge steps to legalize the business. Here are some of the crucial changes that prevailed in 2024:

  1. Brazil

The Brazilian iGaming market possesses vast potential, with a projected market volume of $4.03bn by 2029 (Statista). Therefore, the highly anticipated Normative Ordinance No. 1,207 was published, establishing comprehensive technical and regulatory requirements for online betting licenses. Some of the described requirements include a minimum game RTP of 85%, banned payment with credit cards and cryptocurrencies, a 15% tax on winnings above BRL 2,112 (EUR 338) for the players, and a 12% Gross Gaming Revenue tax for the operators.

2. Canada

In 2024, Canada made significant updates to iGaming regulations, with notable developments in Ontario and Alberta. Ontario, already a leader in regulated online gaming, introduced stricter advertising rules prohibiting the use of athletes, cartoon characters, and celebrities while emphasizing responsible gambling in marketing. Its competitive iGaming model, managed by iGaming Ontario (iGO), continues to drive market growth, tax revenue, and player protection. Meanwhile, Alberta passed Bill 16, enabling private operators to offer online gaming under strict oversight, marking a shift towards modernization similar to Ontario’s model.

3. USA

The United States continued evolving its iGaming and sports betting landscape, with significant developments in several states. Rhode Island became the seventh state to legalize iGaming, allowing residents to access online casino games such as blackjack and roulette. Meanwhile, New York advanced its gaming industry with legislation to license downstate casinos, although full online casino legalization is anticipated in 2025. Additionally, Missouri made significant progress in legalizing sports betting. Voters narrowly approved Amendment 2 in November, setting the stage for the state to become the 39th to allow sports wagering.

4. UK

One of the most well-regulated iGaming markets, the UK, has also seen a range of important regulatory changes aimed at improving consumer protection. For example, operators will now need to conduct light-touch financial vulnerability checks for customers spending above £500 per month. New rules will regulate the design of online games, focusing on reducing game speed and providing clearer information about net spending and game outcomes.

5. South Africa

While sports betting is allowed in most of the provinces in South Africa, interactive games are still prohibited. However, in 2024, the country took significant steps toward regulating online gambling with the introduction of the Remote Gambling Bill by the Democratic Alliance (DA). This bill aims to fill a longstanding legal gap in South Africa’s gambling framework, which has been debated since 2008. It proposes a comprehensive licensing system to regulate operators, manufacturers, suppliers, and employees, with provincial licensing authorities handling applications.

Technology

  1. Cryptocurrency

Cryptocurrency is rapidly growing in the iGaming industry, with a market size of approximately $250 million and significant growth due to its adoption as a secure payment method. According to Techreport, by 2021, crypto wagers constituted 8.5% of global sports betting gross gaming revenue (GGR), and this trend has accelerated, with crypto bets increasing by over 20% between 2022 and 2023. Blockchain technology, the foundation of cryptocurrency, offers decentralized, tamper-proof transactions, ensuring transparency and reducing the risks of fraud or interception. These features make cryptocurrency one of the safest, albeit unconventional, methods for online casino payments, appealing to players seeking privacy, security, and streamlined transactions.

2. Cybersecurity

Cybersecurity is one of the most important aspects of the iGaming industry, and professionals are constantly implementing innovative approaches to strengthen their security systems. One of the top trends is the integration of AI-powered security systems. These tools analyze massive amounts of data to detect irregular patterns that contribute to preventing attacks.

Cloud-based security is another approach that is increasingly used to protect sensitive data and ensure platform reliability. These solutions leverage scalable, remote servers to secure information through advanced encryption and monitoring. As AI cyberattacks rise, iGaming operators are implementing multi-layered security systems that combine advanced encryption and two-factor authentication.

3. AI

AI has an enormous impact on the iGaming industry, enhancing various aspects, from player engagement to security. AI-driven tools enhance personalization by analyzing user behavior and preferences and providing tailored game recommendations, promotions, and rewards to boost user satisfaction and retention. Additionally, AI-powered chatbots are transforming customer support by providing instant, efficient, and 24/7 assistance, improving player satisfaction while reducing operational costs. As AI continues to evolve, its applications in iGaming are expected to expand, further streamlining operations and boosting player trust.

Marketing

  1. Personalized experience

Online casino operators aim to know their customers not only to provide a safe environment but also to personalize their experience. Leveraging data analytics and AI has become a cornerstone for delivering tailored gaming and marketing experiences. Operators are using player behavior data to craft customized promotions, content, and rewards, boosting user engagement and loyalty.

2. Influencer marketing:

This approach is expected to grow stronger within the iGaming industry as it succeeds in creating meaningful connections with customers. More specifically, micro-influencers, with their smaller but highly engaged audiences, are increasingly valuable in iGaming marketing as they offer authentic connections and niche targeting, often driving higher trust and conversions compared to larger influencers. Platforms like Twitch and YouTube amplify these efforts by enabling influencers to create dynamic and interactive content, such as live streams to showcase iGaming products.

3. Gamification:

Gamification has become a defining trend in the iGaming industry, transforming player engagement through the integration of game-like elements such as points, levels, and challenges. This strategy enhances the gaming experience by making it more interactive and rewarding. Features like progression systems encourage players to stay active by unlocking rewards and advancing through rankings, creating a sense of accomplishment. Additionally, personalized bonuses and rewards tailored to player behavior keep users motivated while fostering loyalty.
