(New York City).- Two more contenders in New York City's casino race have met their fate—one moves ahead with approval, while the other is forced to step aside.
The fates of two more New York City casino bids have been determined, with one getting a thumbs up, while the other will have to fold.
Community advisory committees in the Bronx and Brooklyn voted Monday, the former on a proposed Bally's casino on a Bronx golf course once run by President Donald Trump's company and the latter on a gambling hall envisioned for Coney Island's iconic boardwalk.
The bid for the Brooklyn casino failed by a vote of 4-2 late Monday afternoon. It was a different story in the Bronx, however, where the committee advanced the bid to build the $4 billion casino on the site of the former Trump Links golf course by the foot of the Whitestone Bridge. Bally's had purchased the Ferry Point location in 2024.
The lone holdout in the Bronx vote from from Danielle Volpe, who has lived in the Throggs Neck community all her life.
"To prey on a borough that’s already financially struggling, & only offer a casino that can only create gambling problems and crime and traffic, I think that the Bronx deserves so much more," said Volpe.
Following the meeting, Bally's Chairman Soo Kim said his group's bid addressed many of the neighborhood's concerns, including traffic and crime.
"We’ve committed at least $32 million per annum from this project to the community itself, which is a huge amount of money," Kim said.
