(Connecticut).- A Connecticut casino is taking a unique approach to keeping at-risk gamblers safe from the novel coronavirus.
Since the virus is much riskier for older people, and those with underlying conditions, Foxwoods Resort Casino will designate an entire floor to gamblers that are over the age of 55, according to a report from Patch Connecticut.
The tribal resort, which has several different gaming areas on property, will designate a floor in its Rainmaker Casino starting this Friday.
Several retail businesses, including grocery stores, gave seniors special hours to shop without the general public as a way to keep the older population safe, but measures like that have yet to be taken in the gambling industry. The casino claims that it is the first casino to implement this strategy and says it is all part of keeping its guests as safe as possible.
“As part of our commitment to providing an unmatched experience for our guests, we are thrilled to introduce this new offering for guests ages 55 and older,” said Jason Guyot, interim CEO & senior vice president of Resort Operations, in a statement. “The safety of our loyal patrons has been our number one priority since reopening on June 1, and we are excited to offer them this exclusive experience where they can relax and play in a safe, frequently sanitized environment.”
Since it is a tribal property, the casino doesn’t technically have to abide by state regulations. But Foxwoods voluntarily closed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic in mid-March and reopened June 1, with social distancing measures in place.
A month into the pandemic, the casino’s CEO, John James, stepped down from the position. He was replaced by Guyot until a permanent replacement is selected.
