(Illinois).- After more than 30 years on the Fox River, Hollywood Casino Aurora will close its historic riverboat venue on June 10 as PENN Entertainment prepares to launch a new $360 million land-based resort later this month.
The long-running riverboat facility of Hollywood Casino Aurora in downtown Aurora, Illinois, will close permanently on June 10 as the company prepares to relocate operations to its new $360 million land-based casino resort. The closure marks the end of more than three decades of gaming activity on the Fox River.
New Casino Scheduled to Open Later in June
The new casino complex is expected to open on June 24, pending final regulatory approvals. Developed by PENN Entertainment, the project is located near the Chicago Premium Outlets and Interstate 88, replacing the existing riverboat property with a modern entertainment destination.
Major Investment Includes Hotel, Sportsbook and Dining Venues
The new facility will feature approximately 1,200 gaming positions, a 226-room hotel, a retail sportsbook, a full-service spa, an event center, and multiple restaurants, including concepts developed in partnership with celebrity chefs such as Giada De Laurentiis. The development represents one of the largest entertainment investments in the Aurora area in recent years.
End of an Era for Aurora's Riverboat Gaming Industry
Hollywood Casino Aurora first opened in 1993 and became a key component of downtown Aurora's redevelopment efforts. The move follows changes in Illinois gaming laws that allowed riverboat casinos to transition to land-based facilities, enabling operators to build larger and more competitive properties.
Economic Impact Expected to Grow
Local officials and company executives have said the new casino will significantly expand employment opportunities and tourism in the region. PENN Entertainment estimates the new property will employ around 700 people, nearly doubling the workforce of the current downtown operation.
