(Macau).- Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng has expressed satisfaction with casino operators’ ongoing efforts to develop non-gaming offerings.

Macau City leader satisfied with non-gaming efforts by casino operators

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a National Day reception on Sunday, the city’s leader confirmed that each of the six casino operators had been fulfilling their contractual pledges under their respective agreements with the government.

The gaming companies had recently announced plans to invest in revitalisation projects for six relatively run-down districts – with the aim of redirecting tourists there to spend money.

In the meantime, they have also gone into overdrive to stage concerts and exhibitions.

Each firm had assembled a dedicated team to develop non-gaming elements and liaise with government departments to execute relevant projects in an orderly manner, he said.

However, Ho acknowledged that there is still progress to be made when it comes to endeavours to attract international tourists.

Of the 11.6 million visitors to Macau in the first half of the year, only 475,000 were considered to international travellers.

The figure accounts for about 31 per cent of the daily average for the whole year of 2019.

Although tourists from Southeast Asian countries were visiting Macau, the number of tourists from Europe and the United States had yet to reach the expected target, due to the limited number of international flights, he explained.
