Macau: Golden Week failed to meet expectations – SJM Executive Director

(Macau).- Tourism visitation during this year’s Golden Week period did not meet expectations, with business in SJM Holdings’ properties remaining low, the gaming operator co-chairman and executive director, Angela Leong On Kei, stated Wednesday.

Speaking after an SJM event to celebrate the 71st anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, Angela Leong, expressed that it was obvious by government numbers on visitation that it had been a lacklustre National Day holiday period.
Despite the resumption of the issuing of individual tourist visas for residents in the whole of Mainland China right before the holiday period between October 1 and 8, visitor numbers have remained way behind the almost 1 million reported last year.
Some 120,165 visitor arrivals have been reported in the first six days of this year’s National Day Golden Week, an 86.6 per cent year-on-year drop, according to data provided by the Public Security Police Force.
Visitor arrivals in the city have dropped by 86 per cent year-on-year to about 3.2 million, leading to a respective tumble in gross gaming revenues.
Cumulative gaming revenues for the first nine months of this year decreased by 82.5 per cent year-on-year to some MOP38.6 billion, and October is only expected to report slightly better results than previous months.
Still, a recorded speech broadcast during the event, SJM’s Chairman of the Board of Directors, Daisy Ho, stated that the resumption of nationwide travel from Mainland China into Macau and the opening of the new Hengqin Border Checkpoint, together with the local government’s plans to expand visitation and stabilise employment have given a “new impetus” to local tourism and economy.
