(Macau).- Progress on the potential easing of border controls between Macau and Guangdong Province has stalled this week, with Macau unable to offer any guarantees on any border reopening schedules within the Greater Bay Area.
Health Bureau officials said on Monday it is difficult to set indexes and classify conditions for reopening borders, reiterating that many details are still to be discussed between Macau, Hong Kong and Guangdong Province.
The border issue comes as Macau’s sole remaining quarantine hotel, Pousada Marina Infante Hotel, edges closer to capacity.
A total of 296 people are currently undergoing a mandatory 14-day quarantine, leaving just two of the hotel’s 298 rooms still available. Last week, an average of 20 people checked into the designated medical observation hotel each day.
The Macau Government Tourism Office told Inside Asian Gaming it has been reviewing and adjusting the number of designated hotels for medical observation according to the latest situation.
From March to early April, the Macau government had utilized a total of 12 hotels as designated medical venues, but the number of hotels gradually decreased as people finished their quarantine period.
