(Macau).- Macau’s COVID-19 recovery hit new heights last week with the Macao Government Tourism Office revealing the highest single day and weekly visitor arrival totals since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to figures published by the MGTO, visitor arrivals from the week of Saturday 20 to Friday 26 March 2021 reached 189,843 at an average of 27,120 visitors per day – up 109.5% over the recent Golden Week holiday period and 77.8% over the February 2021 average. February included the traditionally busy Chinese New Year period but this year saw visitation dampened by authorities discouraging travel.
The week also began with a 14-month high of 32,016 on Saturday 20 March, and ended with another new high of 32,647 on Friday 26 March.
“The figures suggest a steady upward trend in visitor arrivals recently, while a greater flow of visitors can be observed in local tourist districts,” the MGTO said.
“As the pandemic situation remains stable in the Mainland and Macau, all Mainland visitors are now exempt from quarantine in Macau following the reinstatement of travel permit issuance for Mainland residents to Macau.
“Given the above situation, Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) has seized the opportunity to unfold an array of online and offline promotions tailored for the Mainland market and continuously spotlight Macau as a healthy, safe and quality destination, with the aim [of stimulating] a gradual rebound in visitor arrivals and steady recovery of the tourism industry.”
Macau’s Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ) will release the city’s GGR figures for March this coming Thursday 1 April. GGR for February fell 8.9% compared with January’s figures to MOP$7.31 billion but was 1% higher on a daily revenue basis.
