(City of Lake Ozark).- The proposed project includes a hotel, restaurants, and casino, while the city seeks an agreement to ensure the tribe contributes to local services and boosts revenue.
The Osage Nation is moving forward with plans to build a casino and entertainment district in Lake Ozark, Missouri. The tribe is working with the federal government to place the land into trust, which would allow the development to move ahead.
“Our goal is to make sure the City of Lake Ozark comes out ahead, and they’ve been working with us toward that goal,” said Mayor David Ridgely.
Four years ago, the Osage Nation announced plans for a new entertainment district featuring a hotel, restaurants, entertainment venues, and a casino. The tribe purchased the land and is now awaiting federal approval to allow gambling. If approved, the $100 million project would be located at the corner of Osage Beach Parkway and Bagnell Dam Boulevard.
The large development will require city resources, including water, sewer, roads, and police services. “They’re going to be using our water, sewer, roads, and police department, and they’ve been very cooperative,” Ridgely said.
On Tuesday night, the city’s board of aldermen discussed entering into an agreement with the tribe to ensure it pays its fair share. Two ordinances are being considered that would make the Osage Nation financially responsible, which in turn would generate additional revenue for the city.
“That could nearly double our general revenue fund. Our total revenue is higher, but this would allow us to fund more projects and improvements. We just completed road upgrades and have several other initiatives to make Lake Ozark better for our citizens,” Ridgely explained.
While the project is still in early stages, Ridgely is optimistic about a positive partnership. “In every community the Osage Nation enters, they are good long-term partners. We’re looking forward to that type of relationship here,” he said.
Next week, the city will vote on the proposed ordinances, with members of the Osage Nation tribe expected to attend the session.
